Update on Labour Council's plans to remove local concierge service

The Council Concierge Service is still at risk.

Residents will recall last year we launched a campaign against the Labour Council’s plan to remove the concierge service. We have serious concerns about this and as part of this process we have collected a petition opposing the changes. Thank you to everyone who has signed the petition so far. It is not to late for residents to add their names and if you haven't already signed please fill in the petition sheet overleaf. Cllr Robert Alden said “The most disgraceful aspect of any changes is the Labour Council have made it clear that even if they remove the service residents will still have to pay for it! This cut is not being made due to reduced budgets for the Council as tenants pay a special charge already for the Concierge Service”. Cllr Gareth Moore  added “the Labour Council forget the concierges where introduced to protect the residents of the block and help them and they must remain in the future”.

“Don’t let Labour remove the 7pm lock down of our Blocks”

When Robert Alden first got elected he worked with local residents to help secure a 7pm lock down of local Tower Blocks, where visitors to the block had to go through the Concierge Service buzzer instead of flats after 7pm. This helped stop much of the trouble that had been occurring previously in blocks.  Cllr Bob Beauchamp said “if the Council cut the Concierge Service then this security measure will be lost to tenants, which is unacceptable”.

 Labour’s record on Council Housing

·        In 2002 Labour paid £3.7 million to Accountants, lawyers and consultants to try to force though the stock transfer of tenants homes to a private company.

·        Money that could have been spent on improving houses

·        When Labour last ran the Council they failed to maintain them and had failed to carry out the Decent Homes program of improvements

·        The Government had to threaten to take over Birmingham's Housing stock due to failing maintenance
